This 1911 article by historian Louis Madelin has a very interesting passage about Robespierre’s profound misogyny — he notes that Robespierre had a particular hatred and suspicion not only toward women but toward men he perceived as “led by women,” including Danton. I didn’t have a chance to get into this, but ironically this may have also contributed to Robespierre’s downfall — a central figure in the Thermidor coup, Tallien, was pushed to rebel against Robespierre by the arrest, and presumably impending execution, of his lover (and future wife) Thérése.
